After the introduction to the professional level of diver training, many divers elect to remain PADI Divemasters or Assistant Instructors, but a select few will elect to take a more active role in the industry and become an instructor.

Instructor responsibilities are not limited to teaching divers. Scuba Shack instructors must be involved with all aspects of the scuba industry including marketing, sales and equipment repair for the dive center.

The Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program is one of two distinct components of PADI’s Instructor Development Course (IDC)—the core of PADI Instructor training. The first portion is the Assistant Instructor course followed by the Open Water Scuba Instructor program.

What will I need?
At this training level, you must have your own gear. For this course, you’ll need to complete medical statement and releases. As this is a professional level program, the medical statement must be signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

You’ll need the full PADI IDC crewpak including a variety of materials, not limited to the PADI Instructor Manual and IDC Candidate Workbook. Contact Scuba Shack for details.

Those enrolling in this program must be a minimum of 18 years of age, and be certified as a PADI Divemaster or equivalent. You must also be trained and current (within two years) in first aid and CPR. You’ll need a minimum 60 logged dives and must have been a certified diver for at least six months.

What will my commitment be?
The Instructor Development Course involves a significant commitment of time on weekends and evenings during the week. When an IDC is offered at Scuba Shack a complete schedule is available prior to the start of the class.

After completing the IDC, you’ll be required to enroll and complete the Instructor Examination, two full days of academic, confined water and open water testing completed by PADI instructor examiners.

What results should I expect?
After becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be able to conduct the entire range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving up to Divemaster. You may also choose to acquire specialty instructor ratings in areas of interest, such as Digital Underwater Photographer or Enriched Air Diver.
