Cozumel 2022 - Trip Report
By Trip Leader Joel Toohey
Eleven divers and one non diver from Scuba Shack made their way to Blue Angel Resort in Cozumel, QR, Mexico on Saturday, February 26.
Unfortunately, for those departing from Connecticut, Friday’s ice storm created lingering effects impacting our Saturday departure. Most of us leaving Connecticut, including the group leader, did not arrive until Monday afternoon. With the port closed on Monday due to high winds, at least we didn’t miss any more dives.
Fortunately, the weather improved and the group completed between 9 and 11 dives, depending on when they arrived. We even managed a wonderful night dive at San Clemente. Other dive sites included Paradise Reef, Yucab, Palancar Caves, Columbia Shallow, Delilah, San Francisco Wall and Palancar Gardens.
The coral formations and marine life in Cozumel are just a couple of the reasons divers are drawn back to the island. We saw numerous sea turtles, nurse sharks, eagle rays, southern rays, moray eels of all types, octopus and of course, the splendid toad fish, to name a few.
Blue Angel is another reason for our return trips. It is a small resort for divers with many amenities you would associate with a larger resort. The food is excellent, service is outstanding and top-notch live entertainment is provided most evenings. It’s nice to be able to reflect on the day’s dives with live music in front of a setting sun and a cold cerveza.
A late winter trip to Cozumel is always relaxing, immensely enjoyable, and a welcome respite from a New England winter. With outstanding diving and great friends, this one did not disappoint. I’m sure we will be back soon!
