Bubble Maker Start
Scuba diving is an incredible way to explore the underwater world, and for many young adventurers, it can be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences — becoming a lifelong passion. Children can begin earning a junior certification at age 10, but it’s important to understand that scuba diving is a skill-based, safety-critical activity. It requires comfort in the water, the ability to follow instructions, and time to properly develop confidence.
At Scuba Shack, we specialize in safe, structured, and confidence-building training designed specifically for younger students.
Ages 10–11: Start with Bubble Maker (Required)
All students ages 10 and 11 must begin with our Bubble Maker experience before entering a certification track. We also recommend that students aged 12 start with Bubble Maker as well.
This session is more than just an introduction — it’s a critical evaluation step that allows us to:
- Introduce scuba equipment in a fun, low-pressure setting
- Teach foundational underwater skills
- Build initial comfort and confidence
- Assess readiness for continued training
- All equipment provided — no need to purchase until deciding to continue to certification
Following this session, we provide a custom training plan tailored to your child.
Our Approach: Why Younger Divers Need More Time
Unlike adults, younger students require additional repetition, coaching, and patience to master scuba skills. Most students will require:
- 3–4 pool sessions working 1-on-1 with an instructor
- Additional dry-run practice when needed
- Gradual progression based on comfort and ability
Even highly motivated kids often need extra time — even if they already have strong swimming backgrounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why We Require Private Instruction
For ages 10–11, all certification training is conducted 1-on-1 to ensure:
- Individualized pacing
- Better skill retention
- Increased confidence
- Maximum safety
This approach consistently leads to stronger, safer, and happier young divers.
Why is Bubble Maker required?
Bubble Maker gives children a safe, fun way to experience scuba for the first time, learn basic skills, and get comfortable underwater. It also allows instructors to evaluate readiness and recommend next steps.
What if my child isn’t ready after Bubble Maker training?
That’s completely normal. If a student needs more time, we simply continue building skills until they are ready. Our goal is confidence and safety — not rushing the process.
What skills might my child need to improve to be ready for Open Water certification?
Common areas include:
- Swimming strength and fin use — a child must be able to swim 200 yards continuously and tread water for 10 minutes
- Comfort with face in the water
- Breath control and relaxation
If your child is not comfortable putting their face in the water, we recommend starting with repeated Bubble Maker sessions before certification.
What’s the difference between Scuba Diver and Open Water?
- Scuba Diver: Faster, more limited certification (must always dive with a professional)
- Open Water: Full certification with greater independence
Note: Both certifications limit the junior diver to a depth of 40 feet. We’ll help you choose the best path after your child’s evaluation.
Plan Ahead
Youth scuba training takes time. If you’re preparing for a vacation, we strongly recommend starting well in advance to allow for proper development and scheduling flexibility.
Note: Additional booking fees are associated with course registration. Free rental equipment is included in the Bubble Maker class. PADI Scuba Diver and PADI Open Water certifications require students to purchase their own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots.
