I hope everyone had a great 4th of July whether you had a cookout, watched fireworks, just relaxed or went scuba diving.
Our July Dutch Springs trip is only a few days away. We will be heading down Friday to set up and then start our diving on Saturday with our new DIR Introduction class along with an Advanced Open Water class and a Dive and Drive. You still have time to make plans and come on down for some great mid-season diving in Pennsylvania. Our Deep and Wreck classes in August and September are filling up. Did you know that parrotfish can generate up to 700 pounds of sand a year - the nice white sand you like to walk on at the beach. Unfortunately, parrotfish are also a favorite food fish and their populations are dwindling. The Nature Conservancy has launched the #PassOnParrotfish campaign. You can read about it and more in the REEF July Making It Count enews.
Ghost gear is lost, abandoned or derelict fishing gear including nets, lines and other equipment and conservative estimates suggest there is about 800,000 tons in the ocean. Research by the Ocean Conservancy found that in 2016 ghost gear was the deadliest form of marine debris. Here is a link to an article that describes the removal of a 20,000-pound ghost gear ball from the Gulf of Maine. Amazing.
