Scuba Shack is 100% AWARE!

As divers we are fascinated and in awe of our magnificent oceans and the underwater world. I can still remember my first dives in the Florida Keys & Hawaii, thinking about how lucky I was to explore this unique environment. My first trip to Nassau was another major turning point as I first encountered reef sharks. I wasn’t afraid of them. I respected them and marveled at their beauty.

So these oceans and everything that lives within them need to be protected. So how can one person, one dive shop in central Connecticut possibly help?

Here is how we will start to make a difference. Scuba Shack is now a proud participant in 100% AWARE. What does that mean? Well, with every PADI certification we issue, we will donate $10 to Project AWARE.

Project AWARE connects the passion for ocean adventure with the purpose of marine conservation.

We want to make a difference. This is just one small step that we can take right now. 70% of the planet is blue! Let’s keep it that way.

Nassau, Bahamas – May 22-27, 2019

Scuba Shack’s most popular trip year-after-year includes all the great diving you expect to find in Nassau, with five nights of poolside accommodations at Orange Hill and four days of diving with Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas. Join us May 22-27 for a perfect trip for novice and advanced divers!

Why is the southwest side of Nassau perfect for novice and advanced divers? Most dive sites are close to the island and in waters no deeper than 35 to 45 feet. Most sites feature wrecks and/or fantastic coral formations. But what’s really unique is that on many of those sites – yards away – is the famous Tongue of the Ocean featuring vertical walls covered with hard and soft corals dropping more than one mile deep! It’s simple – novice divers can enjoy the dive along the top of the wall and more advanced divers can enjoy the deeper wall diving!

Last year’s schedule was very popular, so we’re packing this year’s trip with the same fun adventures!

During this Memorial Day Weekend trip, divers will enjoy 10 scheduled dives.

  • Three days of two boat dives each morning featuring a Lionfish Hunt on one morning
  • Plus a two-tank Dive Propulsion Vehicle Trip on one afternoon
  • Plus an all-day Scuba Safari Adventure to Nassau’s Blue Hole with two dives and a trip to Rose Island featuring a beach barbecue.

Trip leader Peter Katz has out-done himself again this year, setting up another unique dive adventure!

Dive by day, and enjoy some of the finest dining on the island by night! Nassau, famous for its warm, clear water, is a draw to TV, movie-makers and divers alike! Dive sites include The Bond Wrecks, Southwest Reef and Peter’s favorite, Pumpkin Patch!

The southwest side of Nassau also features more than a dozen dive sites featuring wrecks placed as artificial reefs!

The Florida Keys – April 10-13, 2019

Scuba Shack is heading to Key Largo for some early season diving. Jeff and Matt Cinciripino are going to be diving with Horizon Divers Wednesday, April 10 through Saturday, April 13. This trip is a little different than our normal dive trips. Essentially you can pick the days that you want to dive. Come for all four days or as many as you’d like.

We will be there to take you diving and offer opportunities to complete training. For anyone who is completing their confined water training with Scuba Shack over the winter, this is a perfect opportunity to get certified in a warm water setting with plenty to see.

PADI Fish Identification Specialty

We will also be conducting PADI Fish Identification specialty course that counts toward your rating as a PADI Master Diver. Read more about this opportunity.

Finally, if you just want to dive with us, come on down and we will be there to provide our guidance.

The plan is to do two dives each day – probably morning and then spend the afternoon’s relaxing in Key Largo. We may also add additional dives depending on interest.

Since this is not like other dive trips, you will be responsible for your flights, hotel reservations and ground transportation. We will make the arrangements with the dive shop and you can pay them directly when you dive.

Our plan is to fly Jet Blue to Fort Lauderdale and then drive to Key Largo where we will be staying at the Courtyard by Marriott. There are plenty of hotel options in Key Largo and flights also go into Miami.

If you would like to come dive with us in the Keys, please let us know the dates you’d like to dive and exactly what you’d like to do when you get there. We are keeping this very flexible.

GUE Fundamentals class at Dutch Springs

On Thursday Aug. 10, five students from Scuba Shack in Rocky Hill, Connecticut took part in a Global Underwater Explores Fundamentals Class at Dutch Springs in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The class was taught by GUE Instructor Ed Hayes and assisted by Gary Woods. The intense training lasted until Sunday afternoon with multiple dives and lectures each day. Divers were trained in pre-dive, ascents and descents, buoyancy control, forward and backward propulsion, turns, air shares, “basic five,” surface marker buoy deployment, team diving skills and much more.

All dives were videotaped, reviewed and critiqued by the instructor and the students. Congratulations to all the students who participated and trained very hard to improve their diving skills.

If you are interested in taking your diving to the next level, the GUE Fundamentals Class could be for you. Please contact the shop for more information.
